The origin of Rooibos
Rooibos is a small bush (Aspalathus linearis) that comes from South Africa, more precisely from the highly arid and mountainous Cederberg region.
For hundreds of years, in the mountains north of the Cape, local people have harvested the aerial parts of the wild rooibos tree. They fermented them to obtain a reddish colored infusion with a sweet and fruity taste. Today, it is considered as the national beverage of South Africa, whether consumed hot or cold. For the last thirty years, it has been exported all over the world, especially in Europe.
Rooibos is considered an herbal tea or infusion because it does not contain any theine. It is mistakenly called red tea, but it does not come from the same shrub as tea.
